Background of the Study

Sleep is a fundamental aspect of human health, essential for physical restoration, cognitive functioning, and emotional regulation. However, sleep disorders, including insomnia, sleep apnea, and hypersomnia, are prevalent among individuals with mental health conditions (Ali et al., 2024). The bidirectional relationship between sleep disturbances and mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder has been widely documented, highlighting how poor sleep exacerbates mental health symptoms and, conversely, how mental health conditions disrupt sleep patterns (Ekundayo et al., 2023).

At the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, which specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders, many patients experience both sleep disturbances and mental health conditions. For instance, depression is often associated with difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep, while anxiety may cause hyperarousal, further contributing to poor sleep quality (Adebayo et al., 2024). Despite the established link between sleep disorders and mental health conditions, the specific nature of this relationship in Nigerian psychiatric settings, particularly at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, remains underexplored. This study aims to examine the prevalence of sleep disorders among patients with various mental health conditions and evaluate the impact of these sleep disorders on their mental health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

There is a growing body of research suggesting that sleep disorders are both a symptom and a contributing factor in the development of mental health conditions. However, in Nigerian healthcare settings, particularly within the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, there is limited empirical data on the specific relationship between sleep disorders and mental health conditions. Sleep disturbances often complicate the treatment and management of mental health conditions, leading to worsened prognosis and quality of life for patients. This study aims to address this gap by appraising the relationship between sleep disorders and mental health conditions among patients in this facility.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of sleep disorders among patients with various mental health conditions at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu.
  2. To evaluate the impact of sleep disorders on the severity of mental health conditions among patients.
  3. To recommend strategies for integrating sleep disorder management into the treatment plans of psychiatric patients.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of sleep disorders among patients with mental health conditions at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu?
  2. How do sleep disorders affect the severity and outcomes of mental health conditions in psychiatric patients?
  3. What are the implications of sleep disorder management for improving mental health treatment at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a high prevalence of sleep disorders among patients with mental health conditions at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu.
  2. Sleep disorders significantly contribute to the severity of mental health conditions in psychiatric patients.
  3. Integrating sleep disorder management into psychiatric care will improve patient outcomes and overall mental health recovery.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on patients with mental health conditions at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, with particular emphasis on assessing the prevalence and impact of sleep disorders. Limitations include potential biases in patient self-reporting of sleep disturbances and mental health symptoms. Additionally, the study is limited to a single institution, which may not be fully representative of the broader Nigerian population.

Definitions of Terms
